All of our staff are carefully selected for their genuine compassion, care and belief to nurture and provide a safe and welcoming environment for children.  They ensure each child in their care feel special, supported, loved and valued. We have a committed team of staff, some of whom have been with us since the day we opened and believe our team is what makes our nursery so successful.

Reference Checks
Before starting employment with us all staff undergo reference checks and clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and must successfully complete a 3-month induction period.

Qualifications
Each member of staff is qualified to level 3 or above Early Years Practitioners and attends Paediatric First Aid training, Food & Hygiene, and Safeguarding Children.  We ensure this training is continually updated and refreshed and they also attend other courses relevant to their work such as Creative play and Being a Key Person.

Baby & Toddler Staff at Nailsea

Management Team

Teri Portch

Teri is the Manager of the nursery and is based in the Baby & Toddler Unit. She has been at Happy Hours since 2005 when she qualified. Teri works alongside the Management Team: Emma Pointon (Deputy Manager in Pre-School unit) and Natasha Shaddick (Early Years Professional). She is responsible for the day to day running of the nursery with particular focus on the Baby & Toddler Unit.  She also has additional responsibilities of being the lead INCO (Inclusion Co-Ordinator) and Safeguarding Officer for 0-2 year olds.
 

Emma Pointon

Emma is the Deputy Manager and has been a childcare practitioner since 1998 and with Happy Hours since January 2000.  She too is responsible for the day to day running of the nursery with particular focus on the Pre-School Unit.  She also has additional responsibilities of being the lead INCO, Safeguarding Officer & lead Behaviour Management for 2.5-4 Year Olds.
 

Natasha Shaddick

Natasha is our Early Years Professional who is based mainly in the Baby & Toddler Unit. However she spends time in both units; implementing the Early Years Foundation Stage as well as being a Student Mentor & the nurseries Office Administrator. Tash has been with Happy Hours since August 2009, first at Yatton and now at the Nailsea nursery. She has an Early Childhood Studies and Education Honours Degree which is a level six qualification as well as achieving her Early Years Professional Status on top. Natasha supports both Teri and Emma in the day to day running of the nursery.
 

Abbie Ayton

Abbie joined Happy Hours in October 2012 having had 2 years’ experience working with babies and toddlers. She has a level 3 in Childcare and works full time as a senior practitioner.
 

Kelly Leahy

Kelly joined the team in October 2010 and has been a childcare practitioner since then based at the Nailsea nursery.  She was based in the Pre-School Unit for 3 years and has now moved to the Baby & Toddler Unit as a Senior Practitioner.
 

Katie Grafton

Katie is Level 3 qualified in Childcare she joined our team as a student and was not long after hired as a full time member of staff.  She has been working with us since July 2014 and is now a senior practitioner in the Baby & Toddler Unit.
 

Nicola McCulloch

Nicola first started at Happy Hours in Yatton in November 2009 whilst she was training and moved to Nailsea in November 2010. She is now a senior practitioner in the Baby & Toddler Unit and is trained in Safeguarding & First Aid.
 

Natalie Gambrell

Natalie joined us in November 2013. She completed her level 3 in childcare with us and is now fully qualified. She works full time in the Baby and Toddler Unit.
 

Chelsea Reynolds

Chelsea joined us in January 2016 and she has a level 3 in childcare. She works full time in the Baby and Toddler Unit however also helps occasionally in the Pre-School unit.
 

Courtenay Calvert

Courtenay started Happy Hours at the beginning of 2017 as a student and is now a fully qualified practitioner. She works full time in the Baby & Toddler Unit. 
 

Shannon Down

Shannon started Happy Hours in March 2018, she is Level 2 qualified and will be continuing her training towards her Level 3 with us. Shannon will be based full time in the Baby & Toddler Unit.
 

Cheryl Vickers

Cheryl started with Happy Hours when it first opened in 1991 and has been a childcare practitioner for 21 years.  She was runner up of the Nursery Nurse of the Year competition in 2002. 
 

Belinda Hughes & Michelle Hodgson : Nursery Cooks

Belinda has been our nursery cook since January 2016 & works Mondays and Tuesdays. Michelle started with us at the end of 2017 and works Wednesday – Friday. They both have training in Food Hygiene & First Aid.

Baby & Toddler Staff at Yatton

Cara Jennings

Cara is our baby and toddler unit leader; she is responsible for the day to day running of the baby and toddler unit as well as being a Keyworker. Cara joined the Happy Hours team in 2011 within the pre-school and then moved into the baby unit to start as the leader in January 2013. Cara graduated university in 2005 with a Degree in Professional Studies in Primary Education. She has plenty of experience with babies and young children; she also has three young children of her own. Cara says “every day is different and it’s great seeing the personalities of each child grow and we have lots of smiles and laughter”.

Laura McGhee

Laura is level 3 qualifies practitioner based in our baby and toddler unit. Laura joined Happy Hours in 2013 after qualifying in 2012 and is a great addition to the team. Laura is working towards becoming a SENCO (special educational needs) co-ordinator in the baby and toddler unit. Laura is a named senior within our team. Laura says “it is so rewarding working with young children, each child is different and an individual and its wonderful watching them progress in their development and grow into their own personalities”.

Cathy Barnes

Cathy is a level 3 qualified practitioner, she qualified in 1996, and Cathy has plenty of valuable experience with babies and young children. Cathy originally worked at our Nailsea nursery in 2001 and returned to the Happy Hours team in 2013.  Cathy says “I so enjoy watching the children learn and develop at a time in their lives when they change and grow so frequently”.

Keri Hill

Keri is a level 3 practitioner qualifying in January 2015 after completed her NVQ level 3 with us. Keri joined our team in 2013 and has since gained lots of experience within the baby unit, she has completed lots of additional courses to extend her knowledge and we are looking forward to her becoming a key worker now that she is qualified. Keri says “I really enjoy looking after the kids at Happy Hours, its always fun getting messy and playing with them”.

Amy Hynam

*Currently on Maternity Leave until May 2017*
Amy joined our Yatton team in October 2014, Amy has a level 3 qualified in childcare and education which she gained in 2002. Before joining our team Amy worked as a nanny for 9 years and previously to that she worked within our Nailsea branch of Happy Hours from 2004 until 2007 as the baby unit manager, Amy has plenty of experience working with babies and young children and is a wonderful addition to our baby unit team. Amy is also a qualified first aider. Amy says “I have always enjoyed working with babies and young children and was very pleased to be offered a position within the baby unit at Yatton, I enjoy helping the children learn and develop and feel proud to be a part of so many children’s lives”.

Tia Broad

Tia joined our Baby and Toddler team in August 2016, she has a level 2 qualification and is working towards her level 3 with us, Tia said “I completed my level 2 within a pre-school and wanted to complete the other part of my training within another area of Early Years, an opportunity became available at Happy Hours Yatton and I was thrilled to start in the baby unit this year, I really enjoy looking after the babies and toddlers, no two days are the same the children are constantly developing and growing which is great to be a part of”.

Rachael Gilpin

Rachael joined our baby and toddler unit team in October 2015, Rachael is currently an unqualified member of staff, however she has plenty of experience in the care sector as well as having three children of her own. Rachael said “I’ve gained lots of valuable experience working alongside qualified staff in the baby and toddler unit, I am constantly learning something new”.
 

Jess Savage

Jess is a level 3 qualified practitioner; she joined our team on a full time basis in January 2017 after working with us on a supply basis on her days off as a nanny since 2015. Jess has lots of experience working with children and families and we are thrilled she has joined our baby and toddler unit on a full time basis.
